Climate Change Initiative

Overwhelming scientific evidence has concluded that certain human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, are increasing the amount of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere and enhancing the “Greenhouse Effect.” Researchers have documented an increase of over 1° F in Earth’s average surface temperature since the Industrial Revolution and they predict temperatures could increase by up to 7° F by 2050. Climate change could impact local cities by causing prolonged heat waves, reduced air quality, more frequent wildfires, and coastal flooding.
Since the early 1990s, Chula Vista has been working to address climate change through a number of programs and policies. The Department of Conservation & Environmental Services implements the following programs:
