Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories

Many greenhouse gases (GHG), which trap heat in the atmosphere and contribute to climate change, have local sources.  Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is produced by burning fossil fuels and is emitted by motorized vehicles and power plants producing energy for homes and offices.  Methane, or CH4, is a product of organic waste decomposition at landfill and sewage treatment sites. Local governments use emission inventories to help identify and quantify these GHG sources.

Working with ICLEI and The Climate Registry, the Conservation Section coordinates implementation of the City's Climate Action Plan and monitors the City’s progress by performing annual emission inventories.  Chula Vista was the first public agency in San Diego County to receive the "Climate Action Leader" designation from the California Climate Action Registry and the "Climate Registered" designation from The Climate Registry.
