Bicycling & Alternative Transportation
Southern California is infamous for its transportation problems. Most residents use single-occupancy motor vehicles for their daily commutes contributing to congested freeways and extended travel times. In addition, congested roadways lead to decreased air quality, elevated greenhouse gas emissions, and dependence on foreign fuel supplies. Over half the energy consumed in the United States goes toward transportation and 98 percent of the transportation sector is fueled by petroleum.
To reduce petroleum-fueled, single occupancy vehicle use within municipal operations and the community, the Conservation Division promotes the following strategies and technologies through its programs and policies:

Bike Chula Vista
A bicycle-friendly community
Bicycling is great for everyone — communities, businesses, schools, and people. It promotes active lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, and improves air quality; but most importantly, it's fun!
The City of Chula Vista continues to expand bicycling-related infrastructure throughout the community to make bicycling safe and easy.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
 The San Diego region will be one of the first locations in the nation to receive new electric vehicle charging stations as part of a $100 million grant from the Department of Energy. In anticipation of the release of models such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt in 2011, the project is the largest deployment of electric vehicles and charging stations in history.
The City of Chula Vista is helping recruit residents and businesses interested in taking
advantage of federal and state incentives for the vehicles and receiving free charging stations. Interested community members should visit the project website at www.theevproject.com or read the project flyer by clicking here.
