City of Chula Vista Receives Funding to Restore Police School Resource Officers
Due to the City of Chula Vista's budget reduction plan, the Police Department's School Resource Officer Program (SRO) was going to be completely eliminated. However, Chula Vista Police Chief David Bejarano announced today that many of the SROs will be reinstated. The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) and the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) have agreed to continue their current SRO funding through this current fiscal year and committed to continue supporting the program through the 2011- 2012 fiscal year. Combined with a new state grant, the funding will subsidize eight School Resource Officers and one School Resource Sergeant. Despite some cuts, this will enable the Police Department to continue to provide this viable program.

The City of Chula Vista continues its quest towards comprehensive pension reform. The City's Mid Managers and Professionals Union have agreed to voluntarily pay the entire employee share of their CalPERS retirement plans beginning January 2011. The 65 positions will experience an 8% cut in compensation to generate over $430,000 annually. This is the first bargaining group out of the City's five employee unions to agree to pension reform.

On Friday, Oct. 15, the California Independent System Operation Corporation (ISO) notified South Bay Power Plant operator, Dynegy, Inc. the 50 year-old power plant is approved for decommission and demolition. This news comes after the ISO received new information about the power demands in the area. The research indicates the local power requirements are lower than the California Energy Commission (CEC) projections. The lower demand led the ISO to conclude the South Bay Power Plant is no longer needed under a Reliability Must Run status.

The event highlights the importance of educating parents and children about being safe around water throughout the year. Most Adoption Fees Waived at Animal Care Facility
The Chula Vista Animal Care Facility will be offering an "Adoption Fee Waived" event April 23 through April 30. All animals, with the exception of kittens, will have the adoption fee waived during this time period. The normal adoption fee schedule is as follows: rabbits $20; cats $65, dogs $75, dogs over 5 years old $25.

Student Exchange Program Seeking Applicants
The International Friendship Commission of the City of Chula Vista is now accepting applications for the 2010 Student Exchange Program with Odawara, Japan. Four Chula Vista residents between the ages of 18 and 25 will host the Japanese students in Chula Vista for two weeks. Candidates are expected to be college or college bound students and must be U.S. Citizens. The Commission provides a $1,000 travel stipend toward airfare.

No Chula Vista Bayfront Fireworks July 4th Annual Display Cancelled in December ‘07 Budget Cuts
Fourth of July fireworks along Chula Vista’s bayfront will not be part of the summer holiday festivities this year. The $40,000 in funding for the annual fireworks display was one of the many painful cuts made in last December’s sweeping round of budget reductions, which totaled more than $15 million.

“Music In The Park,” a free summer concert series, will offer a variety of musical sounds in three Chula Vista parks through Aug. 17. Featured bands will play music ranging from R&B and Latin jazz to Big Band, surfing and oldies. All of the concerts will be presented on Sundays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
