Vehicle Abatement

Abandoned vehicleDo you have an inoperable vehicle on your property that you've been trying to get rid of but can't because you lost the paperwork, or it's too expensive to fix? Is there an inoperable vehicle in your neighborhood creating an eyesore?

We can help! As a public service, The City of Chula Vista, Code Enforcement Division can arrange to have the vehicle removed from your property absolutely FREE of charge. This service is made possible through funds received from the State of California's Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program (AVA). Call us and we will take care of all the details. In return, you'll be helping your community by creating a cleaner, safer and more beautiful neighborhood to live in.

Vehicle being towed

Section 10.80.010 of the Chula Vista Municipal Code allows for the abatement, removal and disposal, as public nuisances, of abandoned, wrecked, dismantled or inoperative vehicles or vehicle parts from private property. In addition, Section 10.80.030 allows a maximum of one inoperable vehicle on a property provided that such vehicle is enclosed within a building in a lawful manner, or otherwise stored in a lawful manner behind a legally-constructed fence, gate or wall not less than six feet in height, and where it is not readily visible from the street or other public or private property.

Vehicles removed under these provisions are destroyed or parted out by a dismantler and cannot be made operational again. Written notices and the opportunity to have a hearing are provided prior to taking any such action.

Complaints may be filed with the Code Enforcement Division in person, by mail, telephone, or e-mail.

When making a report, please provide the following information:

  • The specific address or location where the vehicle is located
  • Description, make and color if known
  • Condition of the vehicle (flat tire, missing engine, wrecked, dismantled, etc.)
  • Your name, address and phone number. No anonymous complaints will be received.
