Census 2010
The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States. It is mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The data collected by the decennial census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.
Census Data for Chula Vista
The U.S. Census Bureau has begun the release of data from the 2010 Census. Development Services Department staff has been working to obtain the available data for Chula Vista, and to prepare materials for presenting that information along with analysis of changes from the 2000 Census.
Limited data releases on state population counts by race and ethnicity began in March 2011 in conjunction with federal redistricting work, followed by select population and housing characteristics in May. Summary File 1 (SF 1), a main Census data product, was released in June and includes population data by age and gender, race and ethnicity, housing counts by occupancy and ownership type, as well as household composition. While we have received and profiled information for Chula Vista as a whole, we are still awaiting data for the smaller Census geographies including Tracts and Blocks, and will expand this site’s content once the data is received. Below are three products from City staff presenting Census data for Chula Vista as of August 2011:

American Community Survey
Different from past census, the 2010 Census does not report information on income and other socio-economic factors (previously included on the “long form”) as that information is now reported through the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS includes the following types of data; income, employment, educational attainment, housing costs, housing characteristics, commuting, language and citizenship, among other data. The ACS was last published in 2009, and the next round of survey is scheduled to commence in Fall 2011. Staff is working to compile and present ACS information in comparison to 2000 Census data, and will add that information here when available.
American Community Survey
Census information for the San Diego region and other jurisdictions is available through the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). Following is a recently prepared SANDAG regional summary report:
