Sewer Lateral Information
| View Sewer Lateral Policy
If a licensed sewer cleaning service or licensed plumber using adequate
power driven equipment with root cutters is unable to clear the
stoppage and the property line cleanout is exposed (see diagram
for approximate location), the city will, as a courtesy,
rod-out the sewer lateral line from the property line cleanout to
the sewer main line located in the city right of way.
If the property owner does not know where the property line cleanout is located, they should call the Public Works Department at (619) 397-6000 to get the cleanout location and have the area marked by a city crew if necessary. The property owner should then attempt to find the cleanout by excavating a 3' x 3' x 3' hole within the marked area (see Digalert notation below). If the cleanout is not uncovered or located, the property owner can then call Public Works Department to request a City crew be dispatched to assist in locating the cleanout.
If it is determined (by a City crew) that the roots from a City tree
caused the stoppage, then that lateral will be placed on the list
of laterals to be repaired citywide. Futhermore, if a stoppage
occurs and your lateral is already on the City's repair list, you may call the
Public Works Department from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday
through Friday, at (619) 397-6000 (691-5151, after hours, weekends and
holidays) to have the lateral stoppage cleared by a City crew.
