Firefighter
Information
GENERAL
REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation from High School, or GED
- At least 18 yrs old at time of application
- EMT certification from the State of California at time of application
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates Degree in Fire Science, Fire Technology, or related
field
- Completion of an accredited Firefighter Training Academy
- Firefighter I and II certification
- EMT-D/C: Defibrillator / Combi-tube Certification
The
position of Firefighter is highly competitive. Our City generally
receives about 800 applications for each recruitment. Typically, we
will hire between 3 - 15 Firefighters over a two-year period. The
eligibility list may be kept for up to two years.
THE TESTING PROCESS
The testing process for Firefighter typically consists of the following
testing hurdles:
- Application screening for required qualifications
- Written Test (Pass - Fail)
- Interviews (There may be multiple sets of interviews)
Physical
Agility Test (For top applicants only)
- Interview with Fire Chief and Senior Staff
- Background Investigation
There may be other forms of testing that are not listed here.
TRAINING
During your first year after hire, you will be trained in all aspects
of Fire Fighting. You will spend the first six to eight weeks in a
Fire Academy
During your first year of employment you will complete numerous probationary
exams.
Also, after the first year, you can either continue study for a Firefighter
II certification, or you can start the certification process on the
department's fire apparatus.
CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES
There are plenty of promotional opportunities for Firefighters throughout
their career in the Chula Vista Fire Department. The next three ranks
in the Fire Department:
- Fire Engineer
- Fire Captain
- Battalion Chief
